I have a confession to make. Sometimes when it comes to choosing cocktails I just can’t (whisper it) be bothered to read through options upon options. Upon options.
I just want something nice. And I want it to arrive without me having to read a tome that is (I’m only slightly exaggerating) as big as the bible.
But an impromptu trip to Covent Garden’s Adventure Bar showed me once and for all the problem with taking this lazy approach.
We saw the words “new cocktail craze” and just thought “why not”.
Well, the reason why not is that Adventure Bar’s Cricket Soup cocktail has an actual REAL cricket as a garnish on the glass. That’s a CRICKET. A dead insect. On a stick. Stuck in your glass.
It was not what I needed after a long day. It looked as though any minute it was about to topple into my glass and ruin what was otherwise a perfectly lovely drink (a combination of gin, vermouth, Aperol peritif, lime juice, ginger ale, fresh mint leaves, fresh mixed fruit and mineral water.)
The barman, who seemed to find our reaction to our cocktails exceedingly entertaining (I don’t imagine people usually emit a high-pitched squeal when served their drink), hastened to inform us the cricket was perfectly edible.
But really. Why would you want to?!
So long as you can manage to summon the energy to actually look at a cocktail menu – or to (with hindsight this is what we should have done) ASK the bar staff (who are super friendly) then Adventure Bars are the perfect place to unwind from your day with a cocktail or two.
Just be wary of any new crazes…
